Shelfmates
Shelfmates invites us to fall in love through the books we love. An in-person dating concept that swaps surface-level scrolling for shared meaning, combining the charm of a bookstore with the spark of romantic possibility.
This is a selection of highlights from the Shelfmates project. Additional visuals, design explorations, and early concepts are available on request.
Modern Dating Offline
Dating apps were meant to bring us closer together but many users report feeling lonelier than ever.
Studies show that swipe-based platforms like Tinder are linked to increased anxiety, emotional burnout, and decreased self-esteem. For those already experiencing mental health struggles, dating apps often feel overwhelming, performative, and disheartening.
A concept collaboration between Waterstones and Tinder, a literature focused speed dating event.

Shelfmates Library Card

Each attendee fills out a mock library card upon arrival. These act as dating profiles but feel tactile, personal, and nostalgic—true to Shelfmates’ tone.

When a match goes well, trade your Shelfmates Bookmarks, so you know all the important stuff for your next date.

Shelfmates Tote Bag and Second Date Voucher
